Flat filtering is faster and easier to keep flowing than a cone. The 18 x 18 inch Orlon flat filter from North Star Maple Supply is cut from dense 16 oz Orlon polyester felt, the same style of base filter maple producers use in flat filter trays and bottlers. It traps the niter (sugar sand) that makes syrup cloudy and gritty.

How to use
Dampen the felt with hot water and press out the extra. Lay it flat in your filter tray, add prefilters on top if you use them, and pour syrup in hot, at 180°F or hotter. Let gravity do the work. Rinse in hot water only, never soap, and dry completely before storing.
